is a transparent, rigid engineering copolymer produced by copolymerizing two monomers — styrene and acrylonitrile. Styrene contributes rigidity, optical clarity, and ease of processing, while acrylonitrile delivers chemical resistance, thermal stability, and surface hardness. SAN represents a direct upgrade from general-purpose polystyrene (GPPS) — retaining its clarity and processability while significantly improving chemical and thermal performance. It is also the rigid matrix phase in ABS, where butadiene rubber is dispersed to introduce impact toughness.
SAN offers excellent optical clarity and transparency with light transmittance making it visually comparable to glass. It exhibits high surface hardness and scratch resistance superior to polystyrene, with good rigidity and tensile strength. A very good chemical resistance to oils, greases, and dilute acids. Its service temperature ranges from approximately 80–100°C with low moisture absorption ensuring good dimensional stability. It accepts colorants well, producing attractive transparent tinted products.
