Polypropylene

Random Copolymer PP (RCP)

Random Copolymer PP (RCP)

is produced by randomly incorporating ethylene — and sometimes butene — comonomer units directly into the polypropylene chain during polymerization. Unlike impact copolymers where a rubber phase is separately dispersed, comonomer in RCP is distributed randomly throughout individual polymer chains, disrupting crystallinity uniformly and delivering its defining characteristics: exceptional optical clarity, reduced melting point, improved flexibility, and superior surface gloss compared to HPP. Ethylene content is precisely controlled to balance clarity and softness against the stiffness and heat resistance retention needed for specific applications — making RCP the grade of choice wherever transparency and aesthetics are as important as structural performance.

Key applications: Rigid transparent packaging is RCP’s most visible application — food containers, fresh produce packaging, deli containers, and premium cosmetic jars exploit its glass-like clarity, stiffness, and excellent organoleptic properties. Its transparency allows product visibility critical for consumer purchasing decisions while maintaining the rigidity and chemical resistance polyethylene cannot match.

Thin-wall injection molding for food service — cups, lids, portion pots, and dairy packaging — relies on RCP’s processability at high speeds, excellent surface reproduction, and clarity. Its lower melting point versus HPP improves cycle times and reduces energy consumption on high-cavitation injection molding tools.

Blown and cast films utilize RCP’s clarity and gloss for overwrap, twist wrap, and flexible packaging applications where optical performance distinguishes premium products on retail shelves. RCP films deliver superior sparkle and transparency compared to LDPE or HPP alternatives.

Pipes and fittings for potable water represent a major infrastructure application — RCP pressure pipes combine clarity (enabling visual flow inspection), chemical purity compliance, and improved low-temperature impact resistance versus HPP. Hot and cold water plumbing systems, underfloor heating pipes, and multilayer composite pipes incorporate RCP layers for their pressure resistance and long-term hydrostatic strength.xible packaging applications where optical performance distinguishes premium products on retail shelves. RCP films deliver superior sparkle and transparency compared to LDPE or HPP alternatives.

Medical and pharmaceutical packaging utilizes RCP’s clarity, chemical inertness, and autoclavability for specimen containers, pharmaceutical bottles, and blister packaging components where product visibility and sterilization compatibility are simultaneously required.

Caps and closures for beverages, personal care, and pharmaceutical products benefit from RCP’s combination of gloss, dimensional precision, and compatibility with high-speed capping equipment — delivering premium aesthetics alongside functional performance.

RCP occupies the clarity and aesthetics performance space that HPP cannot reach, while maintaining substantially better stiffness and heat resistance than terpolymers. Where terpolymers prioritize sealing performance and minimum seal temperature, RCP delivers the optimal balance of transparency, rigidity, and processing versatility across injection molding, extrusion, and film applications — making it the most broadly applicable PP grade wherever appearance matters.
