Glycols

Glycols are aliphatic diols (two hydroxyl groups, —OH) with the general formula HO—R—OH, conferring unique hygroscopicity, low volatility, and broad solvent compatibility. Principal types include ethylene glycol (EG), propylene glycol (PG), diethylene glycol (DEG), dipropylene glycol (DPG), and polyethylene glycols (PEGs). Key properties — viscosity, boiling point, miscibility, and hydrogen-bonding capacity — govern application selection.

Uses span antifreeze/coolants, polymer intermediates (PET, polyurethanes), plasticizers, pharmaceutical excipients, cosmetic humectants, surfactant synthesis, and industrial solvents.
